The Labrador Retriever, One of the most popular breeds in the United States, was once known as "St John's Dog". Native of Canada, this dog was originally trained to jump into icy waters to pull up fishermen's nets. One of the best family companions, Labrador also excels in drug detection and service. Most people love these dogs because they are agile, adept and totally loyal.

Labrador Retriever is a muscular, dog with a broad head, a thick nose and a scissor bite. A powerful neck and medium-sized ears complete the muscular and intelligent look of the Lab. It has webbed feet and is completely covered by hair. The double coat is shorthaired and requires minimal grooming. The undercoat requires special attention while combing. Regularly brushing the coat with a firm bristle brush is all the grooming this dog needs.

Big eaters that love to play and run, that's what a Lab is. These dogs have to be exercised regularly otherwise they tend to put on weight and become lethargic. Labs love to eat and overfeeding is a common mistake. Pups can be given small meals 3 times a day, while adult dogs need 2 meals a day. The labs are commonly prone to hip and eye dysplasia.

Labrador Retriever puppies have a phase when they will gladly bite anything and everything. This usually vanishes with time, but can be very frustrating and painful. Care should be taken to stem this habit from the beginning. Providing soft toys for the pups to chew on will make this phase less painful. Obedience training is a must and no Labrador Retriever training is complete without crate training. Labs are easy to housebreak, and generally learn very fast.

Gentle, intelligent and totally devoted, Labrador Retrievers are excellent family pets. They tolerate children well, and adore their masters. Their reliable and even temperaments and high intelligence have contributed a lot towards their popularity as the devoted family pet. A well-behaved Lab is an asset that every dog owner would be proud of.
