The German shorthaired pointer owes its origin to nineteenth century German hunters who incorporated the Old Spanish Pointer, the Foxhound and the English Pointer to form this breed. Today's German pointer is a high-performing, versatile hunter and an all-purpose gun dog. This dog makes a great companion for the weekend hunter who also wants a bright family dog and watchdog at home.
These pointers have a long muzzle. They are well balanced and clean cut with an elegantly chiseled head. These dogs also possess a large nose, intelligent eyes and broad ears that lie close to the head. Their feet are webbed and the dewclaws are usually removed. This dog is generally smaller than the usual pointer.
The German shorthaired pointer has a short coat with glossy hair. To keep it smooth and gleaming, the coat should be brushed firmly with a bristle brush. Rubbing the coat with a towel will make it shine. Care should be taken to keep the legs and ears dry and clean. These dogs should be bathed only when necessary.
Being hunting dogs, these German pointers are restless and have boundless energy. Therefore, they need to be exercised vigorously on a regular basis. Lack of exercise may make the dogs aggressive and destructive. This vigorous breed eats heartily. A diet of dry food, brisket bones and fresh meat is recommended. Since the dog eats well, it is easy to overfeed which will lead to obesity and disease.
This breed of dog is very hardy and there is very little occurrence of dysplasia. The dogs live up to 15 years if looked after well. Obedience training is a necessary part of German shorthaired pointer training. Being highly intelligent, they are easy and fun to train. "Respect Training" is a must in this breed. Housebreaking may be a bit slow. To aid this, consistent crate training for a period of 4-6 months will be necessary.
Being reserved with strangers, the German shorthaired pointers are good watchdogs. Their furious bark is dreaded by many, though females are less aggressive than males. Apartment living is a sad prospect for these high-wire dogs. Cheerful and energetic, this breed is very good with children. Loyal and loving, their sharp intelligence and fun-loving nature make them prized household companions.
