Steps to Preventing Dog Disease

In todays society there are many things we can do to prevent dog disease in our loving canine companions. Preventing dog disease begins during puppyhood. During the first year of your puppies life it should receive the first series of D.H.P. shots. D.H.P. stands for Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus. In addition to the D.H.P. shots your puppy should also receive it's kennel cough, heartworm and rabies vaccinations. Depending on the threat of exposure in your area, your vet may choose to vaccinate your puppy against leptospirosis as well.

An effective anti flea and tick regimen can help reduce the incidence of other dog illnesses such as ehrlichisosis, babesiosis, lyme disease, tick paralysis and mange. Flea prevention can further protect your dog against tapeworm infestations as their eggs are carried by fleas.

Brushing your dog's teeth once or twice a week with a special dog toothpaste (DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE FOR HUMANS) can help prevent gingivitis, plaque and tartar build up and help prolong the health of your dog's teeth.

Dog disease can also be prevented with a healthy balanced diet with supplements. keeping your dog well nourished can go a long way in keeping your dog healthly.

Regular bathing and grooming will help keep your dog's coat and skin healthy and clean, preventing skin irritations and mange.

In addition to all of the above, making sure all of your dog's vaccinations are up to date and regular annual vet check ups are essential to preventing disease in your dog.
