Dog Chews and Teeth Brushing Promote Canine Dental Hygiene

You would be amazed at how much good something as simple as basic dog chews can do for your best friends teeth. Just because dogs do not get cavities doesn't mean that they don't need regular dental care.

Fortunately, in a dog's case. regular dental care doesn't mean a trip to the dentist every six months. In fact, nature does a pretty good job of taking care of your dog's teeth all by itself. All you need to do is help out in the areas where nature cannot.

Just like any other animal, your dog's mouth is full of bacteria.

While some of this bacteria is desirable, too much of it can cause dental problems.

Plaque is a hard coating consisting food particles, bacteria and saliva particles. As the plaque continues to develop it turns into a substance known as calculus which shows up as a hard sticky deposit on your dog's teeth along the gum lines. In addition to providing dog chews, you can keep plaque under control by regular brushing of your dog's teeth.

Brushing your dog's teeth is easier than you might think. You can buy a canine toothbrush kit which includes special canine toothpaste. Both the brush and the toothpaste are different than those that are used by humans so make sure that you don't just drop into your drug store for an Oral B40 and a tube of Crest!

Before using the actual brush it is best to familiarize your dog with the tooth brushing process by using a soft cloth which is wrapped around your index finger. While calming your dog, and hold its head gently, put a small amount of the toothpaste onto the dampened cloth and gently rub the teeth and gums in a circular motion.

Calm and reassure your dog during the process and reward them with a treat after each session. You should repeat this process for three or four weeks and then gradually introduce the actual toothbrush.

In between brushings, the best way to keep plaque buildup under control, and to exercise the gums and jaw muscles, is to give your dog a couple of the commercially available dog chews. The best ones are made out of rawhide or hard rubber.

Never substitute dog chews with anything that can splinter and harm your dog. Your best bet is to buy several dog chews and rotate them throughout the week so your dog doesn't lose interest and wander off looking for a good table leg to gnaw on.
