This hound is a massive dog. It stands 23-27 inches tall and weighs 36-50 Kgs when it reaches its maturity. A long muzzle, drooping ears and a loose, wrinkled skin are typical of the Blood hound. So is the mournful expression on its face created mainly by its jowls and hanging skin. The skull is very high and prominent. Black eyes set deep in the sockets and a black nose finish the majestic look of this gentle dog.
The Blood hound has a short and hard coat of hair over its entire body. Rubbing the coat with a towel or a chamois will leave the coat gleaming and shiny. The dog should be bathed only when necessary. However, its long and floppy ears need extra care and must be cleaned regularly.
Puppies need to conserve all their energy towards developing good bones and strong muscles. After they reach maturity, these dogs need a lot of exercise. They can walk tirelessly for many hours and make good hiking companions. But they are also very inquisitive and may start off on their own trail if their interest is piqued.
The Blood hound may live up to 12 years. Usually a strong breed, these dogs are prone to stomach cramps and bloating. Hip dysplasia, ear infections and entropion are some other common ailments. In order to avoid bloating, adult dogs should be fed small meals 2-3 times a day instead of one large meal. Wheat, brown rice, avocado and poultry make up the diet of this breed.
The Bloodhound is a very determined and willful dog. For all it seeming docility, it has a mind of its own. Therefore Bloodhound training is a difficult job that requires lots of patience. Obedience training is a must when the pup is still young. Professional training is perhaps the best option. Gentle, loving, noble and massive, Bloodhounds are excellent companions for children. This dog simply LOVES children. The Bloodhound's need for space and its propensity to drool, howl and smell makes it unsuitable for apartment life. They make fantastic pets when they have a large fenced yard, lots of affection and good exercise.
