Because the Beagle was intended to be a member of a pack of dogs, you may consider having more than one in your household, or having other dogs for it to socialize with, particularly if you are not going to be able to spend alot of time with your dog. It's also important to establish yourself as the dog's leader, or else soon the dog will take over your home. Training this breed is highly important to the enjoyment of owning one. The breed is intelligent, and can be trained easily- but they also get bored easily and have a short attention span. Don't be surprised if you are ordering your dog to get into the “down, stay” position, and a butterfly passes the dogs line of site if your dog just gets up and runs after it! The beagle is a very active animal, and needs plenty of outdoor time to hunt, run and play. If you don't provide enough exercise time for this breed, they will look for other ways to entertain themselves, and most will probably not make their owners happy! The beagle dog is very hardy, and can withstand very cold temperatures as well as the heat. For this reason, many people make them outdoor dogs, tying them up to dog houses rather than having them live indoors with the family. This is unfortunate because of the loyalty and love these dogs have for their owners.
