American Bulldogs are characterized by their large, broad heads and athletic bodies. They have short coats that are stiff to the touch, and should be brushed with a firm bristle brush or a rubber mitt. The dogs should be bathed only when necessary. Often, this breed will have scars from field working. When the bulldog participates in dog shows, they are not penalized for scars since they are classified as a working dog. The male dogs of this breed are stronger and larger than the females., with males height ranging between 22 and 27 inches, and females 20 to 25 inches. The weight of an adult male ranges between 75 and 125 pounds, while the females range between 60 and 100 pounds. Bull dogs require moderate exercise, and prefer to be working dogs as this was what the breed is intended to do. The American Bulldog breed makes a wonderful family pet and trains
easily because they will do just about anything for food! They are also focused and intelligent, and will make their own decisions as needed; yet can be immediately called off by the owner and the dog will obey. As puppies, the American Bulldogs tend to be a bit shy and standoffish towards strangers, but by about 18 months of age they begin to show the confidence associated with the breed, and are no longer shy. Bulldog puppies should have early socialization with other dogs and people to encourage the initial shyness to pass. The dogs are loyal to their owners, great with children, and yet are fearless enough to face a human intruder or larger animal.
