Akita

The Akita is a native of a region in Japan by the same name.

This dog has remained unspoiled and unchanged in this region for centuries. Today, this canine is the national Dog of Japan. Because of its keen hunting abilities, this breed has been used as a fighting dog, a hunting dog, a sled puller and an army dog too. This dog symbolize good health in Japan also make excellent hunters since their soft mouths are suitable for waterfowl retrieval.

The Akita (pronounced A-kee-ta) is powerful, solid and well proportioned. He has a broad head shaped like a triangle. Short, erect ears and black small eyes are some other common features. Its webbed feet make it a strong swimmer. Adult male dogs can weigh up to 54 Kgs. These canines have a double coat - a harsh and waterproof outer coat and a soft undercoat. The coat colors may be red, sesame or pure white. The stiff outer coat requires significant grooming. This breed sheds heavily twice a year. Bathing should be done only when absolutely necessary, as water and soap tends to remove the natural waterproofing of the coat. Hip dysplasia, thyroid and skin problems are somewhat common in this breed, but if well cared for, they live up to 12 years.

This dog needs a well-balanced food that contains fat, protein and carbohydrate. Poultry, fish, rice and wheat and 1-2 tablespoons of tuna make up the recommended dietary needs of the Akita. A regular feeding schedule and strict diet control will prevent bloating and associated problems. Their tendency to put on additional weight has to be counterbalanced by providing them with lots of exercise regularly.

Akita training has to start when the pup is still very young. The dog has a stubborn streak and tends to get bored easily. So training will require a lot of patience. These dogs can get aggressive and ferocious if they are not treated well. They may also try to overpower other animals. A firm training is therefore essential.

Intelligent, courageous and fearless, Akitas make good guard dogs. They need supervision and strict handling especially when in company of children and other dogs. It is not an excessive barker though it makes a variety of sounds. Willful and possessive, people need to treat this dog with respect.
