Affenpinscher Dog

The Affenpinscher dog breed originated in Germany with the breed name meaning “monkey-like terrier”.

They got their name from the long hair on their head, around the eyebrows and beard that frames the face and causes the dog to look much like a monkey. Affenpinschers were breed in order to get rid of rodents in stables, kitchens and granaries.

The breed offers a wirey-haired, somewhat shaggy appearance. These dogs have medium sized bones and are approximately 9 ½” to 11 ½” in height. The Affenpinsher's length is almost the same as their height which gives them an overall squared look. Females are slightly longer than males. Affenpinscher’s have rough, dense hair that is approximately 1” in length over the body and shoulders; shorter over the tail and rear of the animal and longer over the head, chest and legs. However, the hair does not require much grooming to maintain a neat appearance. The dog’s hair should never be cut short, as doing so will ruin the coat for many years. Hair sometimes grows around the dogs eyes and should be clipped to make sure the dog can see clearly.

The Affenpinscher Dog is highly intelligent with an inquisitive and alert demeanor. They offer loyalty and affection to their owner and friends making them a good family pet. However the affenpinscher can become overly excited when they feel threatened. These dogs do well with other dogs when they are raised with them. Due to their intelligence, the breed trains well. However, you may want to vary your training methods a bit in order to keep the dog from becoming bored from routine.

There are no major health concerns with the Affenpinscher dog. They do commonly experience respiratory infections during hot weather because of their short noses. The dogs are very active, however due to their size they can usually obtain enough exercise indoors- so even if you live in an apartment you should be able to comfortably own this breed.
