April 3, 2006 13:38 - Volunteers Give Pets a Second Chance

By Ivonne D'Amato (Centre Daily)

CENTRE HALL -- If Princess, a 6-year-old black Lab mix with a painful ear condition, had arrived at the Centre Hall SPCA a year ago, she likely would have been euthanized.

But a lot has changed at the shelter since last summer, when it teamed with a local group of volunteers in an effort to save Princess and other abandoned pets.

The partnership has been successful, with the volunteer group, Pets Come First, raising money for veterinary care -- including $1,500 for Princess' surgery -- starting a foster program and finding adoptive homes for animals. And because of that, the shelter's euthanasia rate has dropped from 65 percent in 2004 to 19 percent in March.

April 23, 2006 14:43 - Guard dog gunned down

Orlando Sentinel

ORLANDO -- Snoopy, a 6-month-old German shepherd, was killed early Monday while guarding a construction yard in west Orlando. The dog was shot with a semi-automatic pistol by someone trying to break into T&T Pipeline on Ferguson Drive, according to Orlando police reports.

"They shot the dog through the gate," said T&T spokesman Jim Tenney. "To shoot a dog like that . . . it's just crazy. It really is. It's just senseless."

The sound of the gunshot at 1:15 a.m. attracted the attention of a security guard working across the road, who saw a gray Chevrolet Caprice speed away from the yard, reports show.

April 23, 2006 15:18 - Time to scoop the poop: Pet owners invited to join in Earth Day cleanup

By HENRY M. LOPEZ | The New Mexican

For most of the year-and-a-half she’s lived in Santa Fe, Robin Morehouse steered clear of Frank Ortiz Park, where pooches are allowed to run leash-free. But a trio of tickets totaling about $250 for playing ball with her unleashed Doberman, Kodi, made her return recently to the park.

When she returned, though, she found the conditions there that had driven her away hadn’t changed. It was covered in feces, she said.

Morehouse a certified dog trainer and owner of U Animal! Pet Services doesn’t put the blame on city officials for the minefield of dog droppings in the park but on pet owners who don’t follow park rules. She’s been working with the city and is organizing a two-day park cleanup beginning today
