March 1, 2006 11:35 - Parvo: For dogs, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

By Linda Wilson Fuoco, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious disease that is especially dangerous for puppies. While the incredibly hardy virus thrives year-round, veterinarians see more cases in the spring and summer when people and their dogs are out and about more because of the nice weather.

The good new is that parvo, as it is often called, is generally preventable through inoculation and generally curable with prompt and intensive veterinary care.

March 2, 2006 09:16 - Attacking the dogs - Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers and Pit bulls

Claremore Daily Progress

Dog attacks grab headlines because they are, mostly, lovable creatures, wonderful companions, and, after all, man’s best friend. Although most of us cherish the companionship of our dogs, they can behave unpredictably.

When a certain type of dog gains a reputation for injury, lawmakers, in kneejerk response, come up with all sorts of proposals under the guise of public safety. Because the breeds most frequently implicated in fatal dog attacks are pit bulls and Rottweilers, they are more specifically named as vicious dogs in the kneejerk proposals.

March 2, 2006 14:11 - Show's champs can change 'bad guy' reps

by Suzanne Hively Plain Dealer Columnist

As I entered a veterinary clinic in the late 1960s with my well-mannered Doberman pinscher on a lead and at my side, I was offended when a woman shrieked, "Oooooh, a Doberman! I'm getting out of here." She bolted for the door.

My dog loved everyone. He thought he was a lap dog, but Dobermans were the alleged "bad guys" in the '60s and '70s. A 1972 movie called "The Doberman Gang," in which well-trained dogs were made to appear vicious while helping to commit robberies, didn't help.

March 3, 2006 11:51 - Village officials decide pit bulls can stay

by SHAUN BYRON Observer Staff Writer

While village officials may have voted down a proposed ban on pit bulls, more investigation will continue to determine if they are truly man's or woman's best friend.

The board voted 4-2 against the possible ordinance, which was brought before the public at a regular meeting, Monday, Feb. 27.

If it were approved, the ordinance would have outlawed anyone owning a pit bull, including "any American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier or any dog displaying a majority of physical traits of any one or more of these breeds.

March 7, 2006 09:27 - Scott guilty of animal cruelty

By Matt Elofson -Robesonian - Staff writer

ROWLAND - Despite a trial that had several starts and stops over five weeks, when testimony had ended, it took a judge only a few minutes to find a Maxton man guilty of animal cruelty.

District Court Judge Greg Bell deliberated for several minutes on Friday before siding with the state and determining Scott had mistreated 92 dogs. Bell is expected to sentence Scott on Thursday. Animal cruelty is a misdemeanor. That day he is also expected to determine what happens with the dogs.

The judge said he wanted a run down of how much it costs to care for the dogs since they were seized in September. The county's portion came to about $32,000, but that does not

March 8, 2006 09:01 - Study: Dog Ownership Should Be Delayed Until Kids Are School-Aged

By Miranda Hitti (Fox News)

To curb kids’ risk of dog bites, a new study recommends that parents delay getting dogs until kids are old enough to go to school.

”Any dog may attack,” write the researchers. They included Johannes Schalamon, MD, of the pediatric surgery department at the Medical University of Graz in Graz, Austria.

Schalamon’s team studied all children -- 341 kids -- treated at their hospital for dog bites from 1994 to 2003. Data included the kids’ ages and the dogs’ breeds.

March 14, 2006 07:09 - Village Law Bites the Bite on Dog Violations

by MARIA BUCCIFERRO, For The Saratogian

The village's proposal to ban specific breeds -- pit bulls, Rottweilers, chow chows and Doberman pinschers -- was dropped after dog owners and dog advocacy groups protested during the first of two public hearings, and village officials learned such breed-specific bans were illegal.

'At the first public hearing, people were ready to lynch us because we said to ban the breeds. We crafted our law based on all the input we got at those meetings,' Mayor John Romano said.

''The dog advocates were
