About Doberman Pinscher Tips, News and Information. : Dog Training : August 2005

August 6, 2005 15:05 - What are ticks?

A tick is a small crablike wingless organism related to scorpions, mites and spiders. They are oval in shape and are considered external parasites which means they live on other animals (They attach to the skin of the host).

Ticks feed on the blood of other animals. They draw the blood up through a beaklike structure. Ticks are known to carry specific disease organisms in their bodies, one of which is Lyme Disease.

Sometimes tick bites are even toxic and have been known to cause (although uncommonly) paralysis in some cases. Read More

August 8, 2005 18:27 - So Where do Ticks Hang Out?

When ticks aren't gorging themselves on a host's blood, they are usually hanging out in weedy or tall grassy areas.

They will wait in these areas until another host (be it an animal or human) to pass through---brushing up against the weeds or grass that the tick is waiting on. Unlike fleas, ticks are not jumpers.

A passer-by must actually make physical contact for the tick to attach itself.

For more information on tick prevention and removal please check out my Ticks Page.

See Dutchess's recommendations.

Frontline Plus for Dogs is the best flea and tick treatment I ever used. Frontline TopSpot killed all the fleas on Dutchess within 24 hours.

What is also cool about Frontline Plus is that it completely breaks the life cycle of fleas by killing eggs and larvae--preventing re-infestation. Frontline Plus also Kills all stages of 4 major types of ticks, including deer ticks. Read more...

August 17, 2005 10:12 - Do You Need Help Sizing Your Dog's Collar?

Sizing your dog's collar is just a matter of being able to place your index finger between your dog's collar and his neck. You don't want your dog's collar to slip off so... Your finger should fit snugly but not to tightly.

To insure your dog is comfortable, make sure to check the collar occasionally for proper fitting and to make sure there is no irritation.

For more information on dog collars check out my dog collar page..

August 22, 2005 14:24 - Constant Barking?

Does your Doberman bark constantly when you put her out on her leash or leave her out in the yard? I've had this problem in the past and it drove me nuts. I purchased a copy of Daniel Stevens' book called Sit Stay Fetch in which he has a pretty cool 4 step plan (strategy) on how to deal with nuisance barking.

New Puppy? Check out my Training Puppies Page. I provide some tips on training puppies you may find helpful in your puppy training efforts.

Thanks for stopping by. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,

Randy
