May 18, 2005 09:26 - Flea and Tick Season is Finally Here.

Spring is here and so is flea and tick season. Enough fleas feasting on your dog's blood can cause anemia, and ticks can cause lyme disease. Now is a good time to start treating your dog for these pests. Both of these pests can cause irritation and misery. If you find a tick on your dog, you can remove it with tweezers, and swab the wound with a cotton ball and alcohol. You do not need to use a hot instrument or flame to remove ticks.

While flea and tick collars are minimally effective (they only kill fleas and ticks on the face and neck). "Spot on" treatments seem to be gaining popularity and are a very effective means for eliminating an existing flea and tick infestation while preventing a new one.

The two leading brands of "spot on" treatments on the market today are Advantage and FrontLine both products kill 98 to 100 percent of all fleas and ticks within the first 12 to 24 hours and remain effective for 30 days before re-application is needed.

Just Remember: Flea products can be toxic if you mix them. Never treat your dog with more than one flea and tick product at one time.

Whatever treatment you decide on, make sure you read all the directions carefully. Ask your veterinarian if you're unsure whether a flea and tick product is safe.
