Being a dog fancier in his own right, he set out to develope a breed of dog that was strong, intelligent, loyal and that had a lot of fight in it if needed. He wanted a dog whose mere appearance would cause the hooligans of the time to think twice before giving him a problem.

Herr Louis breed a dog which contained part Rottweiler, German Pinscher, Great Dane, Manchester Terrier and German Short Haired Pointer.

From those mixed beginnings come all Dobe's who walk the earth today.

The Dobe is a large well built muscular dog that tends to stand approximately 24 to 28 inches while weighing in anywhere from 55 to 90 lbs. The dobe comes in a variety of accepted colors including red, blue, fawn (Isabella) and most notably black...all of which have distinctive tan markings above their eyes and on their muzzle, throat, chest, front and hind legs and below the tail. The breed is known for its short coat and dark almond shaped eyes. Ear Cropping is optional and the tail is usually docked when the dog is around 4 days old.

There are some possible health problems associated with this breed including wobblers disease, cadiomyopathy, hypthyroidism, osteosarcoma and Von Willebrands disease. You can minimize the possibility of getting a genetically defective dog by staying away from the backyard breeders, puppy mills and only purchasing your dog from a reputable and responsible breeder.

The Dobe is best suited for a person or family with an active lifestyle. For obvious safety reasons the Dobe should always be under your control with gear specifically suited for a strong dog breed and should never be allowed to run loose except in designated (fenced in) areas.

The Doberman Pinscher is a very intelligent, alert and loyal breed with a fearless spirit. If properly trained and socialized the dobe is great with children and make wonderful family pets.
